Daily Programming Saga

Starting this blog-thread to motivate and document what the heck I did today.

----------> see "comments" below for chronological progress I'm making <--------------

Today, so far, I am trying to figure out:

Github: command-line 'linkage', how to start, and do stuff <<slightly deprecated article>>

"Everything up-to-date" means nothing has been pushed (because nothing has been added),
did you:
git add
git commit
.........before your
git push?

PostgreSQL -- creating the first account

There is weirdness with Ubuntu specifically. Ubuntu has disabled the root user (and password). They want you to always just use sudo command. Weird, huh?!

I followed these steps found on stackoverflow under the headline:

Login to PostgreSQL - Login failed

The question was:

I installed psql and phpPgAdmin to my Ubuntu11.10 and don't know how to run it??? What is default username and password.

The best answer was:

How to clear the print spool in Windows

How to clear the print spool

update, 5/17/2014: it is absolutely remarkable and DETESTABLE that I still occasionally need to do this, straight through Windows 8, SP1. OMG!

HACKED: d3von.com web site not working

Here's what I get for any page on d3von.com:

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

My WordPress Adventure

Today, Saturday/Sunday February 2, 2014, I'm dawdling, and about ready to install WordPress. I say dawdling because I have been reading all the little descriptions on the WordPress mother-ship website about what it is, etc... Seems like about the friendliest CMS out there--sort of. I dunno, I think I'd write it all more friendly to newbies. I know what it's getting at, but if I didn't know anything about web development, I think I'd be daunted.

vi: replace / substitute

\r is CR (carriage return = Ctrl-M = ^M)

...the rest is easy.

JSON: use PHP's json_decode to extract inner information

Difficult parsing of json (for my noobieness) and this is a good discussion of how to deal with it:

from slashdot:

I am new to php. I need some quick help with json_decode/php. I need to get values of g91 in an array, how can I do this? I suppose there is some recursion value that we can pass to json_decode...

git in terminal to connect to github

All nice info at https://help.github.com/articles/create-a-repo

Some good stuff (copied directly from github's web site):
Create A Repo
If you've found yourself on this page, we're assuming you're brand new to Git and GitHub. This guide will walk you through the basics and explain a little bit about how everything works along the way.

Zoneminder uninstall, purge, whatever

I found this at:

How to uninstall zoneminder in Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring)
If you need to uninstall zoneminder then there are several ways to achieve that depending on exactly what you want to do.

Uninstall just zoneminder
sudo apt-get remove zoneminder
This will remove just the zoneminder package itself.
